Recording Furlough for Tachograph and WTD purposes

It is important that any furlough time for a driver is accurately recorded in your drivers’ hours and WTD records. This will also enable you to potentially reduce a driver’s average working week calculation.

-For EU/AETR drivers’ hours, furlough should be recorded as “Rest” so long as no other work is carried out.

-For WTD, furlough should be recorded as “Leave” for the first 20 furloughed days and at a rate of 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week. After 20 days no time needs to be recorded or accounted for.

See this Guidance in more detail from DVSA below.

“For EU or AETR drivers’ hours tachograph purposes:

  • Record “break or rest period” if conducting no work at all (self-isolating at home or are otherwise not undertaking any work)
  • Record “driving” if engaging in work for another employer driving vehicles in scope of the EU or AETR drivers’ hours rules; or
  • Record “other Work” if conducting work for another employer which does not involve driving vehicles under the EU or AETR rules; or

For working time purposes:

  • Record “working time” if conducting work which is in scope of EU or AETR rules or any other type of work.; or
  • Record “leave” if conducting no work (self-isolating at home or are otherwise not undertaking any work)

The recording of “leave” is unchanged so if it is statutory leave, 48 hours must be recorded for the mobile worker’s normal working week and 8 hours per day for any period of time which is not a full week.  Any leave over and above statutory leave does not have to be accounted in working time totals and can be used to reduce the 48-hour average”.
